the collaborative:’s new cover of "I Need You Around" by the Smoking Popes transforms the original's 90s punk-pop rock vibe into a more introspective and moody rendition. Slowing down the tempo, the band reimagined the song in a 6/8 time signature, which lends it a wistful and somewhat dreamy quality. Led by a Jupiter-8 synthesizer and acoustic guitar, a rich and textured soundscape is created which contrasts with the original’s overdriven chunky guitar lines.

The heartfelt expression of longing and affection in the lyrics is now underscored by the haunting and atmospheric tones of the synthesizer, while the acoustic guitar adds a layer of warmth and intimacy. As the song progresses, it unexpectedly rips into a powerful burst of sound with dripping distorted guitars and noisy feedback, creating a sense of emotional turmoil and intensity, amplifying the song's raw emotional energy.

Despite these significant stylistic changes, the collaborative: have retained the core sentiment of the original. Their moody and slower arrangement brings a new depth to the song's expression of longing, making it both a tribute to and a complete reimagining of Josh Caterer’s classic track.
